INDIA Bloc plans 'Public impeachment' of CEC Gyanesh Kumar ahead of November 1 Rally

New Delhi, Oct 29 (UNI) Leaders of the INDIA opposition bloc met at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence on Thursday to strategise for a public impeachment-style campaign against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, ahead of the alliance's November 1 rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan.
The meeting focused on preparations for the proposed "Impeachment in the Court of the People" programme, with opposition leaders discussing its format, strategy and key elements.
According to sources, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to preside over the public programme, while Kharge will present the proposed impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner. Representatives of INDIA bloc constituents will then put forward their views, followed by the presentation of a chargesheet listing allegations against Gyanesh Kumar. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is expected to deliver the concluding address.
Among those who attended Thursday's meeting were Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, MP Gaurav Gogoi, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Mahua Manjhi, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien, Samajwadi Party leader Harendra Malik, CPI(M) MP John Brittas, and Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Manickam Tagore, along with other INDIA bloc representatives.
Sources said representatives of civil society and people affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls may also be invited to participate in the programme.
The opposition bloc intends to present the initiative as a public exercise to question the Chief Election Commissioner's functioning and demand accountability, rather than as a replica of parliamentary proceedings.
Speaking after the meeting, Congress leader Pawan Khera said preparations for the public impeachment-style initiative against Gyanesh Kumar are progressing well. He added that INDIA bloc leaders held detailed discussions on the issue and deliberated on various aspects of taking the programme forward.
The November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan is expected to serve as a key platform for the opposition alliance's campaign.UNI RVS AAB
