India's space economy to reach USD 40-45 bn in less than decade: Jitendra Singh

Hyderabad, Nov 5 (UNI) union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh on Thursday said India's space economy, currently estimated at nearly USD 9 billion, was expected to grow to USD 40-45 billion in less than a decade, with private sector participation and startup innovation driving the expansion.
Virtually inaugurating Cosmoserve Space's Base 1, India's first private integrated space debris removal facility here in the presence of State IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu, he said the opening up of the space sector through reforms initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unlocked enormous opportunities for private enterprises, investors and young entrepreneurs.
The facility would the India's first private integrated space debris removal and the world's sixth facility equipped with space vision effect and microgravity simulation technologies, in Hyderabad.
Describing Base 1 as a significant step towards ensuring space sustainability, the union Minister said the facility, equipped with space vision effects and microgravity simulation technologies, would support the design, development and testing of space robots for debris removal and in-orbit servicing.
He congratulated Cosmoserve Space founder Dr Chiranjeevi and his team for their efforts in developing indigenous capabilities in active space debris removal and in-orbit servicing.
The company's Mission Embrace, an in-space test of soft robotic vessels conducted in July 2026, demonstrated its technological progress within a short period of its establishment, he said.
Dr Singh appreciated the startup for promoting collaboration with other Indian companies in areas such as satellite manufacturing, propulsion systems, protective technologies and launch services, describing it as an example of an integrated indigenous space technology ecosystem.
Stating that India had moved from having only a handful of space startups to nearly 15 prominent ventures with global potential, he said the country was emerging as an important player in satellite manufacturing, private launch vehicles, advanced propulsion and other space technologies.
He called upon domestic and international investors to explore opportunities in India's expanding space sector and stressed the need to encourage philanthropy in science and research to support innovation and technological development.
Referring to India's achievements in Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan, the union Minister said the country had demonstrated its ability to undertake complex space missions at considerably lower costs.
Space technology was also being increasingly used for applications on Earth, including disaster preparedness, urban development, water management and public welfare, he said.
Emphasising the need to address the growing challenge of space debris, he said Cosmoserve Space's initiative would contribute to making outer space safer and more sustainable for India and the international community.
India's growing capabilities in space technology, research and policy would strengthen its global standing and geopolitical stature, he added.
