India Targets Debris-Free Space by 2030: Jitendra Singh

Hyderabad, Nov 5 (UNI) India is emerging as one of the early global pioneers in space debris removal, with an Indian startup developing advanced technologies to make outer space safer and more sustainable, union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh said on Thursday.
Announcing India's vision of achieving debris-free space by 2030, the union Minister said the country's growing capabilities in active space debris removal (ADR) reflected its emerging global leadership in space technology and commitment to ensuring a safe space environment for humanity.
Speaking virtually from New Delhi, at the inauguration of Cosmoserve Space's Base 1 facility at VSD Tech Park, Gachibowli, Hyderabad, he said the facility marked a significant advancement in India's private space capabilities.
Telangana IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu attended the event as Guest of Honour, while Cosmoserve Space Founder and CEO Dr Chiranjeevi Phanindra was present.
Congratulating the company, Dr Jitendra Singh said the 14,800 sq ft state-of-the-art facility was equipped with specialised infrastructure for designing, building, testing and operating space robots. It houses orbital rendezvous and capture laboratories, space robotics innovation labs, microgravity simulation platforms, satellite integration clean rooms and mission control facilities.
He appreciated the company's pioneering work in active debris removal and in-orbit servicing, citing its Mission EMBRACE, which successfully conducted an in-space test of soft robotic petals in July 2026, within a year of the company's formation.
The union Minister said the experience gained by the team through ISRO and the Gaganyaan programme was now being translated into a collaborative private-sector model. Partnerships with Pixxel for satellite systems, Dhruv Aerospace Netherlands for propulsion systems and Skyroot Aerospace for launch services demonstrated the emergence of an integrated collaboration ecosystem in India's space sector.
Crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's space reforms for unlocking the country's potential, he said the establishment of NewSpace India Limited and IN-SPACe had fundamentally transformed India's space ecosystem over the past five to six years.
India's space economy had grown to nearly USD 9 billion and was projected to reach USD 40–45 billion over the next decade, while the number of space startups had increased from single digits to nearly 450, he said.
Observing that India never lacked scientific talent or technological capabilities, Dr Jitendra Singh said an enabling ecosystem was essential to harness the potential of the country's youth.
He called upon domestic and international investors to increase their participation in the space sector and urged greater philanthropic support for science and research.
Emphasising technological self-reliance and sovereign capabilities alongside international partnerships, he said India's achievements in Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan demonstrated its ability to undertake sophisticated space missions at significantly lower costs.
He added that space technology was increasingly benefiting people on Earth through applications in Gati Shakti, smart cities, disaster preparedness and several other sectors.
Describing Cosmoserve Space's initiative as an embodiment of the spirit of Vishwa Bandhu Bharat, the Minister said India's commitment to space sustainability extended beyond national boundaries for the benefit of humanity.
He congratulated the company for contributing to a cleaner and safer space environment and expressed his desire to visit the facility personally at the earliest opportunity to interact with its team.
