India should lead global longevity and healthy living revolution: Rajeshwar Singh

Lucknow, Nov 5 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA Dr Rajeshwar Singh has called on India to position itself as a global leader in longevity science, biotechnology and artificial intelligence, saying the convergence of these fields could drive one of the biggest economic and industrial transformations in the coming decades.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, Singh said ageing is no longer being viewed merely as an inevitable natural process but as a challenge that could be better understood and addressed through scientific research and technological innovation.
Citing a November 3 report in The Economist, he said longevity biotechnology companies raised USD 18.4 billion in investments last year, exceeding the total investment made in the sector over the preceding decade.
Highlighting the growing global interest in the field, Singh referred to Altos Labs, which raised USD 3 billion in 2022, and pharmaceutical major Eli Lilly's potential deal worth up to USD 2.75 billion with AI-based drug research company Insilico Medicine.
He also cited Retro Biosciences, backed by Sam Altman, which is researching the possibility of adding 10 healthy years to human life.
Singh said the convergence of artificial intelligence, healthcare and biology could transform disease prevention and extend healthy lifespans. Technologies such as AI-driven drug discovery, biological ageing clocks and epigenetic reprogramming could play an important role in advancing this research.
He noted that scientists are engaged in exploring ways to estimate biological age, assess the risk of age-related diseases and restore cellular processes affected by ageing. However, he cautioned that these technologies required further clinical trials to establish their safety and effectiveness.
Emphasising India's potential, Singh said the country's youth must emerge as creators and leaders of the global transformation rather than remain mere consumers of new technologies.
He called for greater investment in research, startups and skill development to strengthen India's position in health technology, AI-based drug discovery, biotechnology and preventive healthcare.
These emerging sectors, he said, could generate substantial opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and nation-building.
At the same time, Singh cautioned against unsubstantiated claims in longevity science, stressing that treatments and technologies must be evaluated on the basis of scientific evidence and clinical trials. He also urged people to remain wary of unproven therapies and expensive commercial promises.
He said a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep and a drug-free lifestyle remained fundamental to healthy ageing.
The ultimate objective of scientific progress, Singh said, should not be to extend life expectancy only for the wealthy but to ensure that every citizen has access to more years of healthy, active and dignified living.
He urged young people to prepare for the emerging health revolution and contribute to making India self-reliant and a global leader in artificial intelligence, biotechnology and longevity science.
