Indian Navy to commission indigenous multi-purpose vessel Samarthak

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) The Indian Navy will commission Samarthak, the first of four indigenously built multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs), at Naval Base Karwar on October 16, marking another step towards strengthening India's defence manufacturing capabilities and maritime operational preparedness.
Built by Larsen and Toubro Ltd under the Government's Make in India initiative, the vessel has been designed to perform a wide range of missions, including maritime surveillance, patrol and low-intensity maritime operations.
Samarthak will also serve as a platform for target deployment and trials, as well as a mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems. Its multi-role capabilities include humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), conversion into a limited hospital ship and salvage operations.
The vessel is expected to play an important role in the Indian Navy's future operational requirements, offering flexibility to undertake diverse missions in challenging maritime environments.
Its integrated combat suite incorporates indigenous sensors, weapons and electronic systems tailored to meet the demands of maritime operations, reflecting the growing emphasis on domestic defence technology and self-reliance.
The ship's crest features an Indian elephant emerging from the waves, symbolising strength, intelligence and agility. Its motto, Victory is Our Sole Aim, underscores its operational ethos.
The commissioning of Samarthak will mark the induction of the first vessel in the four-ship MPV series, expanding the Navy's fleet of versatile platforms for a broad spectrum of maritime tasks.UNI PWS AAB
