Iran condemns restrictions on air traffic between Iran and Iraq

Tehran, Oct 3 (UNI) Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned restrictions imposed on commercial air traffic between Iran and Iraq, blaming the United States’ “extraterritorial” sanctions for disrupting air transport and commercial ties between the two neighbouring countries.
In a statement issued on October 1, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the restrictions were affecting travelers, patients, students and businesses, and called for the restoration of normal air routes between Iran and Iraq.
“The restrictions imposed on air traffic between the two countries… are unacceptable.”
Tehran said Iran and Iraq share “deep historical, religious, cultural and popular ties” and argued that the movement of citizens between the two countries is important for trade, tourism, religious visits, education and medical treatment.
The ministry also criticised US sanctions, saying they undermine national sovereignty and international law.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran… calls for the adoption of appropriate measures in dealing with the economic and bullying policies of the United States to lift the restrictions and restore normal air routes between the two countries in the interests of the two nations and governments.”
The statement reiterated Iran’s position that normal air connectivity between Iran and Iraq should be restored while respecting Iraq’s national sovereignty.UNI AAB
