Terrorist images found on Flydubai suspect’s social media, probe widens

Washington, Oct 3 (UNI) Social media accounts linked to the Omani pilot accused of attacking another pilot aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv contained images of al Qaeda figures and material that investigators are examining for possible extremist links, according to media reports.
The pilot, identified as Hamam al-Hammami, is accused of attacking his colleague with a crash axe and attempting to take control of the aircraft during Wednesday’s flight.
The plane was diverted to Saudi Arabia, where the suspect was detained, according to authorities.
CNN reported that al-Hammami had previously worked for Oman Air but was removed from flight training last year after concerns were raised about what a regional diplomat described as his radical views.
He later worked for Royal Air Maroc before joining Flydubai.
A LinkedIn profile bearing his name said he worked for Oman Air for seven years before leaving in February 2025.
It listed subsequent employment with Royal Air Maroc from June 2025 to January 2026.
The profile has since been deleted. CNN said a source confirmed the profile belonged to the pilot involved in the incident.
The deleted LinkedIn account contained two posts published about nine hours after the incident.
One featured cockpit footage of Boeing 737 Max aircraft and images of El Al and Arkia aircraft before ending with photographs of former al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, who carried out a 2009 suicide bombing in Afghanistan that killed nine people, including seven US intelligence personnel.
A second post showed an AI-generated image depicting Islam’s three holiest sites in Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, accompanied by a poem about rejecting humiliation, not fearing death and defending one's dignity.
The same videos were also posted on an Instagram account carrying the same name and photographs as the deleted LinkedIn profile.
The UAE attorney general, Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, described the incident as a “terrorist act”, saying the pilot attacked his colleague with a crash axe and attempted to seize control of the aircraft.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the suspect was believed to have undergone “Islamist radical indoctrination”.
Israeli agencies, including the Shin Bet, Mossad, military and Transportation Ministry, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the pilot's presence on the flight.
The incident has also raised questions over the pilot's previous employment and security screening.
There are reports that he had been removed from flight training at Oman Air over concerns about his views and was subsequently assigned another role at the airline.
A separate review of deleted posts from an account attributed to al-Hammami showed strongly religious and misogynistic views, including opposition to mixed-gender workplaces and comments about conditions he wanted a prospective wife to accept.
Al-Hammami's LinkedIn profile said he studied aviation management at Buckinghamshire New University in Britain.
UAE authorities are investigating the incident because the aircraft is registered in the country, with UAE law applying to offences committed aboard its aircraft even outside its territory. UNI XC AAB SAS
