Iran will continue seeking dialogue with US: President Pezeshkian

Tehran, Oct 1 (UNI) Iran will continue seeking dialogue with the United States despite what President Masoud Pezeshkian described as three attacks on Iran during negotiations, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Thursday.
"We have never avoided dialogue and will not do so, although the United States targeted our country three times," Pezeshkian said during a meeting with entrepreneurs.
He said the government was seriously seeking to resolve problems facing the business sector and that Iran's leadership was coordinating efforts to address economic difficulties.
Pezeshkian also said Iran was seeking to expand trade routes through neighbouring countries, including Pakistan, Iraq, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, amid what he described as restrictions on maritime routes.
His comments came as disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continued to raise concerns over global energy and food supplies.
Meanwhile, leaders across the world are worried over the continued disruption to fertilizer shipments through the strategic waterway that has the potential to have serious consequences for food security.
Jorge Moreira da Silva, a UN under-secretary-general and head of the UN Task Force for the Strait of Hormuz, told the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs in Brussels said the disruption is already affecting global energy and food security, with some developing countries particularly vulnerable because of their reliance on fertilizer supplies from the Gulf.
He cited Sudan, Somalia, Mozambique and Tanzania, saying that between 50% and 60% of their fertilizer supplies come from the Gulf.
According to Moreira da Silva, the crisis has contributed to a sharp rise in fertilizer prices and a decline in fertilizer use, developments that could reduce agricultural productivity and worsen food insecurity.
The UN has developed a proposed mechanism to allow fertilizer shipments to pass through the Strait of Hormuz while wider discussions over freedom of navigation continue, Moreira da Silva said.
Under the proposal, shipping agents would register requests for fertilizer shipments. Once approved, the UN would coordinate with the parties to the conflict and relevant states to deconflict the shipments and provide vessels with a safe route.
