Trump says US military action against Iran could resume after midterm elections

Washington, Oct 1 (UNI) US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Washington may resume military action against Iran after the US midterm elections if Tehran and Washington fail to reach an agreement that he considers "satisfactory," while saying he did not believe lasting peace with Iran is ever possible.
In an interview with Time Magazine published on Thursday, Trump said he has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz because its terms did not meet his expectations.
"I wouldn't have approved a year ago ... and I wouldn't today," Trump said when asked why he had rejected the proposal.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had said Tehran presented Washington with a seven-day plan for reopening the strategic waterway. Iranian officials and state media later said the United States had responded with a counterproposal, which Tehran was considering.
Trump said Iran had offered to reopen only "some aspects of" the Strait of Hormuz, describing the proposal as insufficient.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global shipping route through which a significant share of the world's oil and gas supplies normally passes. Its disruption has also raised concerns over fertilizer shipments and global food security.
Trump said US military action against Iran, which he said had largely halted in recent weeks, could resume if necessary.
Asked whether he could order new strikes after the midterm elections, Trump said it was "possible", adding that the United States had "a lot of weapons."
Trump said he had initially expected the conflict to last six to eight weeks but decided to continue the campaign after what he described as the destruction of Iran's nuclear capabilities. He said he did not want Iran's government to rebuild its capabilities "in some different form."
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, meanwhile, said Tehran remained open to dialogue with Washington despite what he described as three US attacks during negotiations.
"We have never avoided dialogue and will not do so, although the United States targeted our country three times," Pezeshkian said at a meeting with entrepreneurs, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Pezeshkian said his government was seeking to resolve economic problems and was looking to expand trade routes through Pakistan, Iraq, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan amid restrictions on maritime trade.
The developments come as both sides appear to be considering competing proposals aimed at reducing tensions and addressing the status of the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington continues to signal that military action remains an option.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's busiest oil shipping channels, carrying about 20 million barrels of oil and oil products a day in 2025, roughly 20% of global oil trade. Around 20% of global LNG also passes through the strait, mainly from Qatar.
the Hormuz is bordered by Iran to the north and Oman and the UAE to the south, the strait connects the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. It is about 50 km wide at its entrance and exit and narrows to roughly 33 km at its tightest point.
The waterway is also crucial for shipments of LNG, fertiliser, food, medicines and technology. About one-third of global fertiliser trade normally passes through the strait, making any disruption a potential threat to food security.
