Israel condemns Navi Pillay's Nobel Peace Prize win, says Hitler propagandist Jospeh Goebbels would be proud

Jerusalem, Oct 10 (UNI) Israel has condemned the decision to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Indian origin South African jurist Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay, who chaired a UN commission, accusing the Jewish nation of committing genocide in Gaza.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry described the award as a "grotesque weaponization of an award to legitimize anti-Israel hatred and prejudice", accusing Pillay of a "relentless, politically motivated demonization of Israel".
The ministry also called the genocide allegations against Israel "the biggest lie of the 21st century", adding that " Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels is certainly applauding from hell" the Nobel committee's decision.
Goebbels, who served as Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister from 1933 – 1945 during the Third Reich had advocated the extermination of Jews.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also criticised the award, saying the Nobel committee had "lost its moral compass" by honouring what it called a bigot who had built her career around "inventing and propagating blood libels against the one and only Jewish state".
Pillay, 85, was awarded the prize on Friday for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said she had played a key role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide were prosecuted.
The controversy centres partly on the findings of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, which Pillay chaired from 2021 to 2025.
In September 2025, the commission concluded that Israel was responsible for "the commission of four genocidal acts in Gaza with the specific intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza". Israel strongly rejected the findings.
Pillay, who served as a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) from 2003 to 2008, is also an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in a case brought by The Gambia against Myanmar under the Genocide Convention.
In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza, including the use of starvation as a method of warfare. Israel has rejected the allegations against its officials.
The award comes as the war in Gaza continues to take a heavy toll on the Palestinian population. According to figures from the local Health Ministry, more than 74,000 people, including at least 21,000 children, have been killed and more than 175,000 wounded in Israeli air strikes and ground operations.
The UN estimates that around 1.98 million people, or 90% of Gaza's population, have been displaced since the Hamas-led terror attack on October 7, 2023, which kickstarted the two-year long war that caused the deaths of thousands and the destruction of much of the enclave's water and sanitation infrastructure.
Pillay has rejected claims that she is biased against Israel. After journalists informed her of the Nobel award, she recalled being surprised when people praised her courage for describing Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide.
"Why would you need courage to speak the truth? You interpret the law. You look at all the facts, so it's an impartial decision," she said.
