J&K Assembly to take up resolution seeking TET exemption for pre-2019 teachers

Srinagar, Sep 21 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is scheduled to take up on the second day of its proceedings a resolution seeking exemption of teachers appointed before January 1, 2019 from appearing in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).
School Education Minister Sakeena Itoo will move the resolution in the House, urging the union Government to make the necessary statutory amendment to Section 23 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
The resolution seeks exemption from TET for all teachers appointed before January 1, 2019.
"This House unanimously urges the union Government to make necessary statutory amendment to Section 23 of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act,2009, to exempt all Teachers appointed before 01.01.2019 from appearing in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). This House further urges the union government to take all legal steps and issue the requisite Notification through National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) for exemption of Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)," the resolution to be moved by J&K Education Minister read.
The issue assumes significance in the wake of the Supreme Court’s May 29 ruling making the TET mandatory for in-service teachers. The court, however, granted teachers time until August 31, 2028, to clear the examination and continue in service.
The judgment has caused concern among a large section of in-service teachers in Jammu and Kashmir, who have been seeking exemption from the mandatory TET requirement.
Last month the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the union government to grant a complete and permanent exemption from TET to government school teachers appointed before August 23, 2010.
