Janata Jodo campaign: Hariprasad flags voter-roll manipulation

Shivamogga, Sept 30 (UNI) KPCC president BK Hariprasad on Wednesday alleged manipulation of electoral rolls in Karnataka and called for a united fight to protect voting rights, the Constitution and democratic institutions.
Addressing the Janata Jodo Jagruthi Yatra here, Hariprasad alleged that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls had resulted in a large number of voters being left out of the electoral process.
He claimed that of Karnataka's around 5.47 crore voters, about 1.7 crore had been left out under the SIR exercise and that notices had been issued to around 43 lakh people.
The Congress has criticised the SIR process, alleging that a large number of names were being deleted from electoral rolls. Election authorities, however, have maintained that the exercise is aimed at verifying and updating electoral rolls and giving voters an opportunity to address discrepancies.
Hariprasad said the process could particularly affect elderly voters and others who may find it difficult to appear before officials or produce documents within the stipulated period.
"How will elderly people stand before officials and get their names included? We must all come together to protect our freedom and democratic rights," he said.
He alleged that voter-list manipulation was part of a larger threat to democratic institutions and accused the BJP of undermining the electoral system.
"Elections should be won through people's mandate. We have to fight together to protect democracy," he said.
The KPCC president said the Constitution, democracy and secularism were among the key legacies of India's freedom struggle and urged people to preserve these principles for future generations.
He also criticised the Centre over the SIR exercise and alleged that political issues were being used to divert public attention from questions concerning voters' rights.
Hariprasad's remarks come amid continuing political debate over the SIR exercise in Karnataka, with the Congress questioning the process and election authorities defending it as an electoral-roll verification exercise.
He linked the Janata Jodo campaign to the broader message of peace, harmony and constitutional values associated with Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Hariprasad urged people to remain vigilant and collectively safeguard the electoral process, voting rights and democratic institutions.
