Jason Momoa, WWE wrestler Roman Reigns in talks for cinematic reboot of 'Street Fighter'

Los Angeles, May 22 (UNI) Jason Momoa, Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo and WWE wrestler Roman Reigns are in early talks to join the cast of the upcoming ‘Street Fighter’ adaptation, being developed by Legendary Entertainment in partnership with Capcom.
The project, still in early stages of development, is based on Capcom’s long-running video game franchise, one of the most influential fighting series in gaming history. While the cast has yet to be officially confirmed, The Hollywood Reporter states that negotiations are underway.
The film will be directed by Kitao Sakurai, known for ‘The Eric Andre Show’. Capcom is directly involved in the production, co-developing and co-producing the project alongside Legendary. Sakurai was announced earlier as part of the creative team steering the adaptation, with Capcom playing an active role in development and co-production alongside Legendary.
Originally launched as an arcade game in 1987, 'Street Fighter' gained global popularity with the 1991 release of 'Street Fighter II', widely credited with setting the standard for one-on-one fighting games. It introduced a diverse cast of fighters with unique moves and international backgrounds, laying the groundwork for competitive gameplay and character-based combat that would influence the genre for decades.
The franchise has remained a staple in the gaming world, spawning numerous sequels, spin-offs and merchandise. The franchise' latest instalment, 'Street Fighter 6', was released in June 2023 to critical acclaim and won 'Best Fighting Game' at the 2023 Game Awards.
Previous attempts to bring Street Fighter to the big screen include the 1994 cult film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raúl Juliá, and the 2009 spin-off 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li', released by 20th Century Fox.
This film marks another attempt by Hollywood to bridge the gap between gaming and cinema, as it brings the stories and characters of video games to the big screen. Interest in game-based films continues to rise following box office hits like 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' and the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series. Warner Bros. and Legendary are also set to release a 'Minecraft' movie next month.
This trend has also come to serials, as seen by HBO's 'The Last Of Us' rendition, and Amazon Prime's anthology series 'Secret Level', where it showcased stories from various big games such as 'Armored Core', 'Space Marine 2', 'Dungeons & Dragons’, ‘Honor of Kings’, and ‘Concord’.
