JD(U) expels Anant Singh, Neelam Devi for six years over anti-party activities

Patna, Oct 24 (UNI) Taking a tough stand against indiscipline, violation of party directives and anti-party activities, the Janata Dal (United) today expelled Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh and his wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, from the party for six years, shortly after polling concluded for the biennial elections to eight seats of the Bihar Legislative Council.
According to an official order issued by JD(U) Bihar president Umesh Singh Kushwaha, Anant Singh's primary membership of the party has been cancelled with immediate effect, and he has been expelled for six years.
The party has also recommended to the Bihar Assembly Speaker that Singh's legislative membership be terminated under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which deals with disqualification of legislators on grounds of defection.
The order accused Singh of defying party directives, using inappropriate language against the party's top leadership and engaging in activities against the party's interests during the Bihar Legislative Council elections.
In the same order, the JD(U) cancelled the primary membership of former MLA Neelam Devi, wife of Singh and expelled her from the party for six years over alleged involvement in anti-party activities.
As it is, Singh had openly opposed JD(U) candidate Neeraj Kumar in the Patna graduates' constituency of the Legislative Council elections and had publicly supported Jan Suraaj candidate Dr Anuj Singh.
The party''s action comes ahead of the counting of votes for the Legislative Council elections, scheduled for October 27.
The political bitterness between JDU legislator Anant Singh and the party’s Patna Graduate constituency candidate Neeraj Kumar had come to the fore during the campaign for the said election.
The differences and the internal bickering continued despite union Minister and senior party leader Lallan Singh's intervention to defuse the confrontation and for a settlement between the duo.
Mokama MLA Anant Singh argued that Neeraj Kumar had campaigned against him during the Assembly elections and even after raising the issue at the party forum, the party did not take action against the negative campaigning.
Irked at it, Anant Singh categorically stated that he would not campaign for someone who had not sought votes for him and had indulged in negative campaign against him.
JDU has fielded sitting MLC and senior leader Neeraj Kumar from the Patna Graduate constituency. But Anant Singh has openly opposed his candidature and thrown his weight behind Anuj Singh, of Jan Suraaj.
