Jharkhand: BJP to run statewide MMDR awareness campaign

Ranchi, Sep 19 (UNI) The Jharkhand BJP will run a statewide awareness campaign on the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act from September 19 to 30, party state president Aditya Sahu said on Saturday.
Sahu said the campaign would include press conferences, street-corner meetings and discussions at block headquarters, besides distribution of copies of the Act to explain its provisions and the party's position on the issue.
He said BJP leaders and workers would reach people across the state with what he described as factual information on the MMDR Act and counter what he alleged were misleading claims by the JMM and Congress.
The campaign began in Jamshedpur on Saturday with Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi addressing a press conference, Sahu said.
Sahu said the MMDR law was a national legislation and claimed that the interests of states, including royalty, premium, District Mineral Foundation (DMF) funds and GST, remained protected under the amendments.
He said the party would explain the provisions of the law and its potential implications for Jharkhand, which has significant mineral resources.
Sahu alleged that the JMM and Congress were opposing the amendments to mislead people and claimed that the changes would promote stability, transparency, investment and employment in the mining sector.
He also alleged that the amendments had affected illegal coal mining and claimed that this was behind the opposition to the legislation.
Sahu said the BJP would continue to put forward its position on the MMDR Act through public programmes and social media.
