Jharkhand: Governor calls for farmer-focused agricultural research

Ranchi, Oct 8 (UNI) Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Thursday called for linking agricultural research with farmers’ needs and developing technologies that can increase productivity and income while reducing costs and conserving soil and water.
Addressing the ninth convocation of Birsa Agricultural University here, Gangwar said the success of agricultural research should be reflected in farmers’ fields rather than remaining confined to laboratories.
He said agriculture was the foundation of the economy and livelihood of millions of people, while climate change, erratic rainfall, water scarcity, soil health and the problems of small and marginal farmers had increased the need for science and innovation.
Gangwar called for the practical use of artificial intelligence, drones, remote sensing, precision farming and modern irrigation technologies to benefit farmers.
Referring to Jharkhand’s plateau terrain, he said a significant amount of rainwater flows away and irrigation facilities remain limited in several areas.
He stressed water conservation, better utilisation of rainwater, expansion of irrigation and crop diversification suited to local conditions.
The Governor said Birsa Agricultural University was contributing through improved crop varieties, seeds and planting material, training, advisory services and agricultural extension.
He called for expanding the university’s work in education, research and innovation.
He also highlighted opportunities for youth in agri-based startups, food processing, horticulture, animal husbandry and fisheries, and urged them to create employment opportunities besides seeking jobs.
