Jharkhand: Hemant Soren stresses constitutional recognition of tribal identity, rights

Giridih, Nov 5 (UNI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren today said the distinct social and cultural rights of tribal communities were recognised by the Indian Constitution and stressed the need to preserve their identity, traditions and heritage.
Addressing the Marang Buru Dhoromgar Mahasammelan at Madhuban police station grounds in Pirtand, Giridih district, Soren said tribal communities were among the oldest in the country and their cultural roots must be protected through collective efforts.
Speaking in the Santhali language, he said differences in religious practices and languages should not weaken social unity. While some members of the community identified with Hindu traditions and others with Sarna, preserving their common cultural heritage remained important.
The Chief Minister said forests were central to tribal identity and livelihood, describing them as having spiritual significance for the community. He emphasised the importance of protecting Marang Buru Dhoromgar and said its preservation and care were a collective moral responsibility.
Soren urged younger generations to understand their traditional customs, practices and historical background. He said tribal communities needed to remain connected with their roots while working towards educational and economic empowerment.
Referring to the historical struggles of tribal communities and the movement for a separate Jharkhand, he recalled the contribution of his father, Shibu Soren, to the statehood movement.
He said agriculture and animal husbandry had traditionally sustained tribal livelihoods, but younger generations were gradually moving away from these occupations. Collective participation and cooperation were necessary for the overall development of the community, he added.
The Chief Minister also expressed concern over substance abuse and appealed to tribal communities to work towards a drug-free society. He referred to the government's Phulo Jhano Ashirwad Yojana, which seeks to provide alternative livelihood opportunities to women involved in the sale of traditional rice beer and illicit liquor.
Soren assured the gathering that the memorandum submitted by the organisers would be considered on its merits and that the government would extend possible assistance.
The conference was attended by MLAs Somesh Soren and Kalpana Soren, Marang Buru Bachao Sangharsh Morcha central president Fagu Besra and representatives of tribal communities from Jharkhand and several other states.
