Odisha: SUM Hospital saves 1.47-kg premature baby after removal of diseased lung

Bhubaneswar, Nov 5 (UNI) Doctors at SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, have saved a premature baby girl weighing just 1,476 grams after surgically removing her left lung affected by a congenital abnormality.
Born at 34 weeks through an emergency Caesarean section to a 28-year-old first-time mother following IVF conception, the infant was diagnosed with Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation (CPAM) in the left lung and right-sided pneumothorax. She required immediate intubation and mechanical ventilation.
Further investigations revealed pulmonary hypertension. On the 15th day after birth, a paediatric surgery team led by Dr Antaryami Pradhan performed a left pneumonectomy, removing both lobes of the affected lung.
The infant later developed postoperative pulmonary hypertension, infection, and coagulopathy, necessitating intensive care, multiple blood component transfusions, and continued ventilatory support. Her condition gradually improved with coordinated treatment and nutritional support. She was extubated on the 24th day and weaned off oxygen by the 50th day.
Discharged a week later, the baby was breastfeeding and accepting expressed breast milk, with satisfactory weight gain. She maintained normal oxygen saturation without respiratory distress, while her neurological condition was also found to be normal.
Doctors from the departments of Neonatology, Paediatric Surgery and Anaesthesia jointly managed the challenging case.
Head of Neonatology, Dr Debasish Nanda, congratulated the team on the successful outcome.
