Jharkhand: IIT-ISM conference focuses on future-ready mining roadmap

Dhanbad, Oct 3 (UNI) IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on Saturday began a two-day international conference to deliberate on sustainable, technology-driven and safe mining towards the Viksit Bharat@2047 vision.
The conference, organised by the Department of Mining Engineering, brings together policymakers, regulators, industry representatives, academicians, researchers, technology providers, mining professionals and students.
The discussions focus on responsible mineral extraction, critical mineral security, decarbonisation, renewable energy integration, mine safety and productivity, and technology-led solutions for the mining sector.
Eastern Coalfields Limited CMD Satish Jha attended the inaugural session as the chief guest. Kalyan Kumar Hajra, Director of JMS Mining Pvt Ltd; Bijesh Kumar Jha, President and Head, Bauxite and ... of Hindalco Industries Ltd; CSIR-CIMFR Director Arvind Kumar Mishra; and IIEST Shibpur Director V.M.S.R. Murthy were the guests of honour.
Mining Engineering Department Head B.S. Choudhary highlighted the importance of technological innovation and responsible mining to meet India's future mineral requirements.
The technical sessions on Saturday covered sustainable mining for a net-zero future, next-generation mining technologies and automation, and critical and strategic minerals.
Presentations included AI-assisted open-pit mine planning, machine-learning applications, digitalisation and automation, LiDAR- and radar-based technologies for accident prevention, rare earth exploration and sea mining technologies.
The second day will focus on mine safety, health and human-centric mining, along with policy, governance, regulatory frameworks and AI/ML applications. The conference will conclude with adoption of the MVB@2047 Conference Recommendations.
