Jharkhand: Sahibganj-Barharwa rail link remains disrupted

Sahibganj, Oct 4 (UNI) Train services on the Sahibganj-Barharwa rail section remained disrupted for the sixth consecutive day on Sunday as Ganga erosion continued between Sakrigali and Maharajpur stations.
The distance between the railway track and the Ganga bank at the affected stretch has reduced from around 13 feet to 11 feet due to continued erosion, according to railway officials.
Railway authorities are placing boulders, sleepers and dust along the riverbank and installing long poles to prevent further erosion towards the track. The restoration work is being carried out round the clock.
The Ganga water level stood at 27.65 metres on Sunday, around 40 cm above the danger mark of 27.25 metres. The rate of rise has slowed, with the water level increasing by about one cm every three hours.
Malda Division DRM Manish Gupta has been supervising the situation at the site for the past two days. Around 500 workers are engaged in three shifts, while 110 wagons of boulders and 13 wagons of sleepers are being used in the protection work.
Railway personnel from four divisions have also been deployed.
The disruption has affected movement during the Durga Puja period, with traders dealing in fruits, vegetables, clothes and jewellery reporting difficulties.
As a partial relief to passengers, the Sahibganj-Bardhaman passenger train has been extended to operate from Tinpahar to Bardhaman from Sunday. The train will depart Tinpahar at 2:45 pm.
The service is expected to provide relief to daily passengers travelling from Tinpahar, Rajmahal, Barharwa, Pakur, Nalhati and Rampurhat.
