Jhota murder: Father demands Mansa SSP's transfer as CBI raids medical stores

Chandigarh, Oct 24 (UNI) The father of slain anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota on Saturday demanded the immediate transfer of Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Chaudhary, alleging possible police complicity in his son's murder, even as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches at medical stores in the district.
Twelve days after Jhota was shot dead on October 13, his family continued to refuse permission for a post-mortem examination, insisting that their demands for accountability be addressed first.
Jhota's father, Bhim Singh, questioned the functioning of the district police and demanded the dismissal of DSP Harjinder Singh Gill and City-2 police station SHO Beant Kaur, against whom disciplinary action has reportedly been initiated.
"The Mansa SSP should be transferred immediately. We suspect police involvement in the murder and want an impartial investigation," Bhim Singh said, raising concerns about the local police administration.
The allegations against police officials have not been established, and the CBI investigation remains underway.
The family and an action committee have also demanded the resignations of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav.
Meanwhile, CBI teams reportedly searched several medical stores in Mansa on Saturday, examining pharmaceutical stocks amid allegations involving the unauthorised sale of addictive medicines.
The searches form part of the agency's investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jhota's killing and possible links with the illegal drug trade.
Bharatiya Kisan union leader Rakesh Tikait visited the protest site and extended support to the family's demand for justice.
"Both the Centre and the Punjab government are responsible for the growing drug menace. Instead of making announcements, governments must take concrete action against drug traffickers," Tikait said.
He described Jhota's killing as a serious issue concerning the safety of individuals campaigning against narcotics and the accountability of government institutions.
Tikait urged farmers and social organisations to strengthen the movement against drugs and ensure that the activist's campaign continued.
Jhota's family has maintained that the protest will continue until its principal demands are addressed.
The prolonged dispute has delayed the post-mortem examination and cremation despite the murder investigation being transferred to the CBI.
The agency has already questioned family members and examined locations linked to the accused as part of its inquiry.
The family insists that accountability must extend beyond the suspected attackers to anyone found responsible for facilitating or concealing the crime.
