JK Govt extends old pension scheme to employees recruited against pre-2009 posts

Srinagar, Sep 28 (UNI) In a significant decision benefiting thousands of government employees, the Jammu and Kashmir Government on Monday issued orders allowing employees appointed against posts advertised before the introduction of the New Pension Scheme (NPS) in the union Territory to opt for coverage under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
The decision follows approval by the Council of Ministers and is aimed at employees who were appointed against posts advertised or notified before December 24, 2009, but subsequently joined service under the NPS, an official spokesman said.
Under the order, eligible employees have been given a one-time option to switch from the NPS to the OPS.
The government has prescribed a three-month window for exercising the option. Eligible employees will have to submit their choice through the proper channel within "three months from the date of issuance of the order".
The order makes it clear that the option, once exercised, will be final and cannot subsequently be changed.
Employees eligible for the benefit who fail to exercise the option within the stipulated three-month period will continue to remain covered under the New Pension Scheme.
The move is expected to provide relief to a large number of employees whose recruitment process had commenced before the notification of the NPS, but whose appointments and joining took place subsequently.
With the government now notifying the option, eligible employees will have to complete the formalities within the prescribed timeframe to avail themselves of coverage under the Old Pension Scheme.
