Karnataka: Haveri cops open fire on murder accused

Haveri (Karnataka), June 26 (UNI) In a tense and fast-developing operation, the Haveri police opened fire on two murder accused — Ashraf and Nagaraj Savadatti — today after they allegedly attacked a police team attempting to arrest them near Kondoji village in Hanagal taluk.
The two men are prime suspects in the brutal killing of Shivananda Kunnur, a case that has drawn public attention and led to widespread calls for justice from Kunnur’s family and community leaders.
According to police, the accused were being tracked following credible intelligence regarding their movement in the Hanagal region. A special police team, acting on the tip-off, cornered the suspects near Kondoji. When the officers attempted to take them into custody, the duo allegedly resisted violently.
"During the operation, both accused suddenly attacked the police team with sharp weapons," said a senior police official. "Sub-Inspector Sampath had no choice but to open fire in self-defense to protect his colleagues and himself."
The bullet injuries sustained by Ashraf and Nagaraj were reported to be serious but not life-threatening. They were immediately provided first aid and later shifted to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubballi, under strict police security.
Superintendent of Police Anshu visited the hospital and reviewed the condition of the accused. She later told reporters that the officers followed standard operating procedures and fired only after all other means to subdue the attackers failed.
The police have formed multiple teams and are tracking few more suspects, some of whom are suspected to have fled to other states
On June 24, Kunnur, a 44‑year‑old Congress worker and contractor, was ambushed near Mahesh Dhaba in broad daylight by a group of six to seven individuals wielding machetes, reportedly over a land dispute
