Karnataka Upalokayukta flags weighing fraud at Belagavi APMC

Belagavi, Oct 29 (UNI) Karnataka Upalokayukta Justice Ashok Hinchigeri has flagged alleged irregularities in weighing practices, excess commissions charged by middlemen and the failure of wholesale vegetable traders to issue sale receipts at the Belagavi Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), raising concerns over transparency and farmers’ interests.
During a visit to the APMC on Thursday, Justice Hinchigeri inspected weighing machines used by vegetable traders and found alleged discrepancies in weighing practices. He also objected to middlemen charging higher commissions and the absence of receipts for wholesale vegetable transactions.
The Upalokayukta directed officials to provide necessary facilities to farmers and ensure transparency in market operations so that growers receive fair prices for their produce.
The findings come amid growing concerns over farmers’ returns and accountability in agricultural markets in Belagavi district, where sugarcane growers are also agitating for better prices and greater transparency in the sugar industry.
Sugarcane farmers have been demanding clarity in the calculation of sugar recovery rates and an end to deductions from their payments towards transportation costs. They have also sought higher sugarcane prices and a revision of the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar.
The farmers had set a 3 pm Thursday deadline for the state and union governments to respond to their demands.
The alleged irregularities at the vegetable market have brought the spotlight on the role of market authorities and intermediaries in safeguarding farmers against unfair trade practices.
The absence of sale receipts, in particular, raises concerns over transaction records and accountability, while alleged discrepancies in weighing could directly affect the quantity for which farmers are paid.
Justice Hinchigeri’s intervention underscores the need for stricter oversight of agricultural markets and effective mechanisms to protect farmers’ financial interests.
The latest findings are likely to intensify scrutiny of the functioning of the Belagavi APMC and the measures taken by officials to ensure fair trading practices.
