Kerala HM slams former DGP R. Sreelekha over Operation Toofan remark, demands apology

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 15 (UNI) Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Thursday demanded that former DGP and Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councillor R Sreelekha withdraw her remark describing Operation Toofan as fake and apologise.
Talking to reporters here, Chennithala said it was inappropriate for a former DGP to make such statements and level baseless allegations against the Kerala Police.
Operation Toofan, launched on June 2 as part of the state's campaign against narcotics, had received public support across Kerala, cutting across political affiliations, he said. Public participation was crucial to the fight against drugs, he added.
Remarks that created a false impression about the functioning of the Kerala Police were unacceptable, Chennithala said. He also demanded that Sreelekha withdraw her remarks against Rahul Gandhi and apologise.
Commenting on her announcement of resignation and subsequent withdrawal, the minister questioned her conduct.
Chennithala also strongly criticised the Delhi Police action against Athira, an NSU (I) leader and law student, alleging that she had been brutally assaulted and suffered injuries across her body. He further alleged that her clothes had been torn and that the authorities had failed to take her complaint seriously.
Athira later sent her complaint to Chennithala and the state police chief. The Museum police had registered an FIR based on her complaint, he said.
The state was examining the legal options available to pursue the matter, the minister added.
Stressing that participation in protests and demonstrations was not a crime, Chennithala said the right to protest was fundamental to democracy. Any assault on a person for exercising that right, or the failure to address a complaint, was a serious matter, he said, adding that the issue would be pursued through legal means.
