Kerala Nilambur Assembly byelection on June 19

Malappuram, May 25 (UNI) Kerala Chief Electoral Officer Ratan U Kelkar has said the Nilambur Assembly by-election will be held on June 19 and the gazette notification will be issued tomorrow.

Ratan Kelkar said the counting of votes will be held on June 23 and the last date for filing the nomination will be on June 2.

The date for scrutiny of nominations will be on June 3 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination will be June 5.

He said the Election Commission has been focusing intensively and consistently on improving the quality, health and integrity of the electoral roll as it is the foundation of free, fair and credible elections.

Applications are invited from eligible citizens included in the electoral roll after the amendment of Section 14 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 by the Election Laws (Amendment) Act 2021. The commission has made a special summary revision of the electoral roll by mentioning April 1, 2025 as the qualifying date for enrolment as an elector in a year.

The final publication of the electoral roll took place on May 5, 2025.

In the case of applications received up to 10 days before the last date for filing nominations, the process of updating the electoral roll will continue continuously till the last date for filing nominations, in relation to the next qualifying date.

The Commission has decided to use EVMs and VVPATs in the by-elections at all polling stations.

Sufficient EVMs and VVPATs have been made available and all steps have been taken to ensure smooth conduct of the polls with the help of these machines.

Meanwhile, the voter's primary identification document will be the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC). However, any of the 12 identification documents including Aadhar card, MGNREGA Job card, Pan Card, Driving License, Indian Passport can also be presented at the polling station, a Public Relations Department (PRD) release said today.

The Nilambur by-election was necessitated following the resignation of Left Democratic Front (LDF) backed Independent MLA P V Anvar on January 2024.
