Kerala orders tourist spot restrictions and 24-hour control rooms as heavy rain threat persists

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 22 (UNI) The Kerala Government has issued special safety directions to the Tourism Department and District Tourism Promotion Councils (DTPCs), ordering restrictions at waterfalls, water bodies and other vulnerable tourist destinations amid heavy rain warnings, with round-the-clock control rooms to be set up until the alerts are withdrawn.
The restrictions will apply to districts under orange alert and neighbouring districts experiencing widespread rainfall. Tourism activities in hilly areas prone to landslides and landslips should also be restricted until the rain subsides, according to the directions issued on Thursday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts on October 22, forecasting isolated very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Very heavy rainfall is defined as precipitation ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
Yellow alerts have been issued for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts on Thursday, and for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Friday.
The tourism authorities have been instructed to install safety signboards at landslide-prone locations, particularly along roads leading to vulnerable tourist destinations, and impose necessary travel restrictions to prevent accidents.
Special arrangements should be made to ensure that tourists arriving from other states and foreign countries are also informed about the weather warnings. Emergency contact numbers must be widely circulated among visitors to help those caught in dangerous situations or stranded obtain assistance.
The directions stipulate that special control rooms should function round the clock until the weather warnings are withdrawn. Restrictions imposed at tourist destinations should be publicised through the media and social media platforms, while police, disaster management and fire and rescue services control rooms should be informed to facilitate coordinated emergency response.
Meanwhile, the IMD has prohibited fishing along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coasts until October 25 and along the Karnataka coast from October 23 to 25, citing the likelihood of strong winds and adverse weather conditions.
Winds reaching 35-45 kmph, occasionally gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coasts.
The third local cautionary signal, Local Cautionary Signal No. III, will continue to be hoisted at ports in Kerala in view of the possibility of strong winds along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts.
The signal remains in force at Kasaragod, Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, Beypore, Ponnani, Azhikkal, Kochi, Alappuzha, Neendakara in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram ports.
Fishermen and owners of small boats and vessels have been urged to strictly follow the prevailing weather warnings along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts and check the latest advisories before venturing into the sea.
