Kerala Police register zero FIR over alleged assault on NSUI activist in Delhi

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 15 (UNI) Kerala Police have registered a zero FIR in connection with the alleged assault on NSUI activist Athira Vijayan during a protest in Delhi’s Connaught Place, following a complaint submitted by her to the State Police Chief.
The case was registered at the Museum police station here under Sections 74, 76, 115, 117, 126, 296(b), 351(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the allegations detailed in the FIR, Athira was brutally assaulted during an NSUI lightning protest in Connaught Place. She alleged that police personnel beat her inside a police van and at the police station, while women police personnel dragged her along the road.
The complaint further alleges that she was slapped after being taken to the police station and assaulted on her lower abdomen and private parts. It also alleges that a shawl was tightened around her neck, leaving her struggling to breathe.
The zero FIR was registered in Kerala although the incident allegedly occurred in the national capital. The case follows Athira’s complaint to the State Police Chief seeking action over the alleged treatment meted out to her during the protest.
The incident has triggered concern over the alleged use of force against the NSUI activist during the protest. The registration of the case in Kerala has also drawn attention to the legal proceedings arising from incidents involving public authorities outside the state.
