Telangana records all-time high power demand of 20,003 MW amid El Niño concerns: CM

Hyderabad, Oct. 15 (UNI) Telangana recorded an all-time high electricity demand of 20,003 MW on Thursday, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy attributing the surge to rising temperatures and increased consumption by the agriculture and industrial sectors.
Addressing a press conference, after a review meeting with ministers and officials on the El Niño situation and the state's preparedness, the Chief Minister said the state's average power consumption was around 6,500-7,000 MW when Telangana was formed in 2014-15, but had increased significantly over the years.
Electricity consumption had risen by around 6,000 MW in the past two years, he said.
He noted that temperatures of nearly 38 degrees Celsius were being recorded in rural and urban areas in October, although such temperatures were normally associated with the summer months.
The unusual weather conditions had increased electricity demand at a crucial stage of the agricultural season, when farmers needed power to protect their standing crops, he said.
With the monsoon crops expected to approach the harvesting stage in the next 15-20 days, the government was holding regular reviews involving the Agriculture and Energy departments to ensure adequate power supply to farmers and industries.
Revanth Reddy congratulated Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, who also serves as the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Finance, and electricity department personnel for meeting the record demand.
He said the department had been working continuously to maintain supply despite the challenging conditions.
The Chief Minister said the government was making efforts to protect crops and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the critical agricultural period.
