Kerala seeks Rs 620 cr from Centre to implement projects relating to human-wildlife conflict

Kochi, June 21 (UNI) Kerala government has urged the Centre to sanction special financial assistance of Rs 620 crore for the implementation of projects to resolve issues related to human-wildlife conflict in the state.
The government also urged the union government to amend the Wildlife Protection Act-1972 to effectively curb human-wildlife conflict and declare wild boar as vermin species.
Kerala Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran expressed his displeasure at the Centre's letter to Kerala on June 11, 2025, stating that hunting of any wild animal listed under Schedules I and II of the Act is prohibited, except in exceptional circumstances.
Highlighting the grave wildlife-related challenges faced by Kerala, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department sent a letter to the Union Ministry on June 6, requesting to update the Wildlife Protection Act-1972 to reflect current realities.
In his second letter to the Centre, the Kerala Minister urged the simplification of existing rules, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and advisories that pertain to dealing with aggressive wild animals.
As per the law, the Chief Wildlife Warden can only take initial steps such as capturing, tranquilising or relocating a dangerous wild animal. Lethal action can be authorised only if all other options are exhausted and the situation leaves no alternative.
The letter also calls for the declaration of wild boar as a vermin species, at least in identified conflict hotspots such as specific villages where attacks are more frequent, for a minimum period of six months.
Additionally, the state has expressed concern that the funds allocated by the central government for addressing human-wildlife conflict are insufficient.
