Kerala to bring comprehensive law for protection of senior citizens: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 30 (UNI) Kerala will bring in a comprehensive legislation to provide legal protection to senior citizens, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said on Wednesday.
Inaugurating a proclamation rally at Vivekananda Park, Kowdiar, organised as part of the campaign for the International Day of Older Persons, Satheesan said the proposed legislation would ensure stronger legal safeguards for the elderly.
He said the government would ensure that no person in Kerala was left without anyone to care for them. New initiatives involving the younger generation and caregiver training courses would be introduced as part of efforts to strengthen care and support for senior citizens.
Kerala has the distinction of being the first State in the country to establish a separate department for senior citizens, which was a matter of pride, Satheesan said.
The department was established not merely to implement welfare schemes for senior citizens but also to utilise their experience and knowledge for the benefit of society, he said.
The government would launch programmes aimed at making senior citizens economically self-reliant by providing opportunities to earn an income, while also introducing initiatives that could become models for the rest of the country and the world, the Chief Minister said.
Satheesan also flagged off a walkathon and bicycle rally in which senior sportspersons, NSS volunteers, school and college students and members of the public participated.
The walkathon began at Kowdiar Palace Junction and concluded at Manaveeyam Veedhi. A Thiruvathira performance by senior citizens was also held as part of the programme.
Senior Citizens Department Secretary Rathan U Khelkar, Director Dr Arun S Nair and Lions Clubs District Governor V Anilkumar, among others, attended the function.
