Kharge accuses BJP of betraying Uttarakhand, says people want change

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday launched a sharp attack on the BJP government in Uttarakhand, accusing it of betraying the hopes and aspirations of the people during its ten years in power and alleging a deterioration in law and order, growing concerns over women’s safety and a persistent failure to ensure accountability.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Kharge said the people of the hill state has become increasingly disillusioned with the BJP’s double-engine government and are now demanding answers and a change in governance.
“The ten years of the BJP’s double-engine government in Uttarakhand have served only to betray the hopes and aspirations of the people of the state,” he said, alleging that the breakdown of law and order, serious questions over women’s safety, the arrogance of those in power and the continued evasion of accountability had eroded public confidence in the government.
Kharge asserted that the Congress is firmly committed to championing the rights and interests of the people of Uttarakhand and would continue its fight against the state government both on the streets and within the legislature. He said the party would persist in raising issues affecting ordinary citizens and holding those in power accountable.
“The people of Uttarakhand are now demanding answers and want change,” he said, underlining the Congress’s resolve to regain public confidence and offer an alternative focused on good governance and public welfare.
“Our resolve is to win the trust of the people and give Devbhoomi Uttarakhand a safe, sensitive and accountable government that places public interest above everything else,” Kharge said.
The Congress president’s attack comes as the party intensifies its preparations for the 2027 Uttarakhand Assembly elections, seeking to dislodge the BJP, which returned to power in 2022. The Congress, which has been working to strengthen its organisational presence in the state, is attempting to turn public grievances against the ruling dispensation into a broader political challenge.
Kharge’s statement also indicates the issues likely to dominate the Congress campaign, with law and order, women’s security, accountability and alleged arrogance in governance expected to figure prominently in its efforts to challenge the BJP’s continued rule in the state. UNI SKA AAB
