Kohli enters Tendulkar territory, takes shorter route to 15,000 ODI runs

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 27 (UNI) Records in cricket are rather like old monuments. They acquire dust, acquire reverence and, every now and then, someone comes along and climbs over the wall.
Virat Kohli did just that on Sunday.
With one handsome pull through mid-wicket off Alzarri Joseph, Kohli became only the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs. The Greenfield International Stadium rose as one, applauding the man who has spent much of his career making milestones look almost commonplace.
Kohli raised both arms, acknowledged the applause and then got on with the business of batting.
There was something particularly appropriate about the shot. Joseph offered him the short ball; Kohli did not duck, retreat or negotiate. He got on top of it and thumped it past mid-wicket for four. Fifteen thousand runs had arrived with a little violence, as most of Kohli's cricketing milestones tend to.
Yet the more interesting story lies in the arithmetic.
Tendulkar needed 377 innings and 17,528 balls to reach 15,000 ODI runs. Kohli has done it in 303 innings and 15,950 balls — 74 fewer innings and 1,578 fewer deliveries.
That is a substantial difference in a format where every ball is a small wager between ambition and disaster.
There is, of course, another side to the ledger. Tendulkar was 34 years and 66 days old when he reached the mark. Kohli is 37 years and 326 days. From their respective ODI debuts, Tendulkar took 6,402 days to get there; Kohli took 6,614.
Numbers, like politicians, can be made to tell different stories. What they cannot conceal is the scale of the achievement.
Tendulkar still sits atop the ODI mountain with 18,426 runs. Kohli now occupies the only other chair in the 15,000-run room.
For years, Tendulkar's records were spoken of in the tone reserved for Himalayan peaks — visible, majestic and apparently beyond ordinary human reach.
Kohli has spent the better part of two decades walking towards them.
On Sunday, he reached one of the biggest.
And he did it with a pull shot.
