Ancy’s two-centimetre heartbreak makes her Day 8 standout

Nagoya, Sept 27 (UNI) India’s Day 8 medal rush had several impressive performances, but Ancy Sojan’s two-centimetre miss for gold gave the day its defining sporting drama as she produced a 6.53m leap to win silver in the women’s long jump at the Asian Games.
Ancy was not simply another silver medallist in India’s haul. She had been in command of the competition and moved into the lead with her 6.53m effort on the fifth attempt, only for China’s Huang Yingying to produce a 6.55m jump with her final attempt and snatch gold by the narrowest of margins.
That two-centimetre gap separates Ancy from the rest of India’s Day 8 medal stories.
Sarvesh Kushare also came close to gold in the high jump, but his silver was decided on countback after both he and Chinese Taipei’s Fu Chao-hsuan cleared 2.25m. Fu had cleared the height on his first attempt, while Sarvesh needed two.
Parul Chaudhary arguably produced the day’s most significant statistical performance, winning bronze in the 3000m steeplechase with a personal best and national record of 9:08.67. But she was chasing the leaders rather than holding the gold-medal position before the decisive final moments.
Tejaswin Shankar’s bronze was another substantial achievement, particularly given the demands of the decathlon. His 7,934 points earned him a second successive Asian Games medal, but Japan’s Yuma Maruyama and China’s Chen Xinghua finished ahead of him.
Harita Bhadra supplied another memorable moment with bronze in the 200m, edging the fourth-placed runner by just 0.01 seconds. But the photo-finish drama came in the battle for bronze, rather than for gold.
Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh both reached squash singles finals and came away with silver, but both lost their finals in straight games. Their medals were significant, particularly Anahat’s first Asian Games singles silver, yet neither final had the late reversal that defined Ancy’s long-jump contest.
The boxing trio of Ankush Panghal, Parveen Hooda and Narender Berwal also deserve mention, but their quarter-final victories assured medals rather than produced medals on Day 8.
That leaves Ancy with the strongest narrative of the day: she led, produced 6.53m, came within two centimetres of gold and was denied only by a final-round response from her Chinese rival.
