Kolkata Municipal Corporation clerks’ union backs engineers’ protest over Taratala godown collapse arrest

Kolkata, Sep 16 (UNI) Giving impetus to the ongoing protest over the arrest of an engineer in connection with the Taratala godown collapse, the clerks’ union of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation on Wednesday extended its support to the movement.
Echoing the concerns raised by the protesting engineers, the clerks’ union opposed the arrest of sub-assistant engineer Amirul Sheikh in connection with the June 24 incident, when a three-storey, under-construction tea godown in the Taratala area of South Kolkata suddenly pancaked, leading to 16 fatalities and over 20 injuries.
According to Amitava Bhattacharyay, general secretary of the KMC Left-affiliated clerks’ union, the grounds cited for the engineer’s arrest were not in accordance with the municipal corporation’s rules.
According to Bhattacharyay, under the modified rules passed during the previous Trinamool Congress-ruled board, structural stability is the sole responsibility of the designated structural engineer and not that of the civic body or the sub-assistant engineer.
He said proposals for large and structurally complex buildings are examined by a high-level committee comprising the Municipal Commissioner, officials of the state Fire and Emergency Services department and the corporation’s Director Generals, with final clearance signed by the Mayor.
Considering these provisions, holding an SAE responsible for the incident and arresting him was unfair and baseless, the union said.
The union secretary demanded the immediate release of the arrested engineer and said no suspension order should be issued against him.
The clerks’ union also demanded the restoration of the existing promotion system, which it alleged had recently been halted.
