Kolkata Municipal Corporation resumes food safety drives in the city

Kolkata, Sep 17 (UNI) After a hiatus of about a week, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Thursday resumed its intensified food safety drive, carrying out zone-wise inspections across the city.
The day’s inspection focused mainly on the Golpark area, known for its cluster of eateries and popularity among food lovers.
The drive began at a prominent sweet shop, where civic officials reportedly found several hygiene-related violations during food preparation. The team found non-consumable ingredients and a feather inside a packet of namkeen, following which the spices were discarded and the shop was instructed to maintain proper cleanliness and hygiene in its food preparation area.
The officials later inspected several well-known restaurants, where they reportedly found undated meat stored in unhygienic kitchen conditions. The team discarded sausages, jaggery and a packet of processed kebabs with visible fungal growth.
The inspectors also visited a popular eatery selling momos, where they recovered and discarded undated and visibly stale prawns, meat and processed momos.
The KMC and the state Health Department had conducted intensive food safety inspections during the first week of September. During the week-long drive, officials discarded 1,224 kg of food and collected 161 samples. The civic body had also suspended the FSSAI licences of 54 establishments. UNI NN NST CDS
