Kolkata:Work on to install modern surveillance system, revamp security at Writers'

Kolkata, Sep 23 (UNI) With the historic Writers' Buildings set to regain its old prominence as West Bengal's seat of power next month, the police are working on an elaborate plan to revamp the security system in the colonial-era edifice.
Top police officials said the security of the country's oldest secretariat building, established by the British in 1780 and from which all previous chief ministers of Bengal, except Mamata Banerjee, ruled the state during their entire tenures, is being thoroughly redesigned and upgraded.
According to sources, initially, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and five other ministers are expected to function from the Writers', ending their stint at the present secretariat Nabanna on the other side of the Hooghly river. Banerjee had shifted the secretariat to the Howrah address in 2013, saying the "dilapidated" Writers' Buildings needed to be renovated and modernised. However, nothing much was heard about the progress of work in the Writers' during the Trinamool regime.
But after the BJP government came to power in May, Adhikari had declared that the secretariat will be return to Writers' Buildings. Since then, the state's Public Works Department and law enforcement teams have been coordinating to integrate modern surveillance systems and security checks alongside ongoing structural restoration.
With the time at their disposal being short, the work is now proceeding at a fast pace.
Recently police and security officials conducted detailed walkthroughs and floor-by-floor inspections to restrict unauthorised entry and monitor access points across the complex.
Sources said, "Security protocols focus heavily on regulating internal movement. Measures are being taken to safeguard designated ministerial zones on the second floor, and prevent public disorder on the premises."
High-level security reviews involved direct assessments by senior state police leadership, the Home Department, and Kolkata Police to match the threat perception of housing the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
Enquiries revealed that modern gizmos and gazettes would be put in place.
Renovation and construction work of the CMO have already been completed, while renovation is in full swing at the offices of the chief secretary and the DGP, ministers and other senior bureaucrats, who are also likely to shift from Nabanna.
There is also a proposal to entrust the Adani Group with some of the remaining renovation work of the entire Writers' Buildings. UNI SSP NST CDS
