Kumaraswamy questions attempts to tarnish Siddaramaiah’s image amid sting row

Bengaluru, Oct 10 (UNI) union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday accused the Congress of allowing Karnataka’s political atmosphere to deteriorate amid the escalating controversy over alleged sting operations targeting political leaders, while defending former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s public standing and questioning attempts to tarnish his image.
Describing the developments as “childish politics”, Kumaraswamy expressed concern over the direction of political discourse in the state and said he had not expected Karnataka to witness such a situation.
“Siddaramaiah has built a reputation through his work for the common people. Why are you trying to tarnish the image of such a person? Who carried out the sting operation, and has any action been taken against them so far?” he asked.
Kumaraswamy noted that Siddaramaiah had broken the tenure record of former Chief Minister D Devaraj Urs and earned recognition through his work for ordinary people. He questioned why a leader with such a public standing was being drawn into a controversy involving alleged covert operations.
The controversy has intensified following competing allegations by Kumaraswamy and Chief Minister DK Shivakumar over alleged sting operations.
Kumaraswamy has alleged that a sting operation was used to force Siddaramaiah out of the Chief Minister’s post, while Shivakumar has claimed that an attempt was made to trap him shortly after he assumed office.
Shivakumar has said he possesses photographs and documents relating to those allegedly involved. These claims have not been independently established.
The issue has triggered a political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the Opposition, with allegations and counter-allegations over the purported use of sting operations to target political leaders.
Congress leaders have rejected Kumaraswamy’s allegations against Shivakumar as politically motivated and baseless.
Kumaraswamy questioned whether the authorities had identified those responsible for the alleged operations and taken action against them. He also asked whether the government was protecting those involved instead of holding them accountable.
Expressing concern over the prevailing political climate, he urged the Congress leadership and the party high command to take responsibility for correcting the situation, arguing that the developments reflected poorly on the state’s political environment.
He also questioned the Congress leadership’s silence over remarks attributed to Siddaramaiah concerning legislators from North Karnataka during a Legislative Assembly session, asking why party leaders had not addressed the issue.
Kumaraswamy said the Congress should introspect over the developments and take corrective measures to prevent further deterioration of the political atmosphere in Karnataka.
