Ladakh’s first medical college to become operational in 2027-28

Srinagar, Oct 20 (UNI) Ladakh’s first medical college in Leh is set to become operational from the academic year 2027-28, following approval from the union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena said.
In a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor said the ministry had granted a one-time relaxation from the requirement of completing 80 per cent of the infrastructure before initiating recruitment of faculty and support staff.
He thanked union Health Minister J P Nadda for taking cognisance of his request and approving the relaxation, which will allow the administration to begin preparatory recruitment for 103 sanctioned regular posts while construction of the dedicated academic infrastructure continues.
“This approval fulfils a long-standing aspiration of the people of Ladakh,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
Officials said as an interim arrangement, two newly constructed buildings have been identified to serve as the academic block and students’ hostel. The existing 200-bedded SNM Hospital, supported by around 60 experienced doctors, can provide the clinical training required for the first batch of MBBS students.
“The interim facilities will be used temporarily, in accordance with the conditions stipulated by the Department of Expenditure, until the dedicated infrastructure is completed,” officials said.
Ladakh LG said the establishment of the medical college would expand opportunities for local youth to pursue medical education closer to home and strengthen the region’s healthcare ecosystem in the long run.
The UT administration, he added, would ensure that all necessary arrangements are made to welcome the first batch of medical students.
The proposed medical college is expected to mark a significant development in medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Ladakh, where students have traditionally had to travel outside the region to pursue MBBS studies.
The decision to permit preparatory recruitment before the prescribed infrastructure completion threshold is met is expected to facilitate the process of operationalising the institution ahead of the 2027-28 academic session.
The administration is expected to continue construction and make the necessary academic and staffing arrangements before the first batch of students is admitted.
