Navjot Sidhu's birthday celebrated with poor families in Amritsar; daughter backs his political comeback

Chandigarh, Oct 20 (UNI) Former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu's birthday was celebrated among underprivileged families in Amritsar on Tuesday, with his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu and daughter Rabia Sidhu distributing essential supplies in slum settlements and using the occasion to speak about public service, Punjab's drug crisis and the former cricketer's possible return to active politics.
The mother-daughter duo visited the Chamrang Road area, spent time with economically disadvantaged families and distributed essential items to mark Sidhu's birthday.
Speaking to reporters, Rabia said the family had chosen to celebrate the occasion among ordinary people, continuing a tradition observed last year.
She said her father had always wanted to remain connected with the people and considered public service central to his life.
Asked whether she wanted her father to return to active politics and assume a leadership role in Punjab, Rabia said she would personally welcome such a development but stressed that the decision rested entirely with him.
"Honest people should come forward in politics, not those who merely pretend to be honest," she said, adding that voters were capable of distinguishing between genuine public servants and those making empty claims.
Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, a former Punjab legislator, said she had no ambition to become an MLA, MP or chief minister and remained committed to serving people regardless of political office.
"I have no desire for any political position. My only objective is to serve the people," she said, according to the account of her remarks provided to this agency.
She said she maintained a close emotional bond with families in the Amritsar East constituency and would continue working for their welfare.
Expressing concern over Punjab's drug problem, she said successive failures to take effective action had allowed the menace to deepen.
She also called for stronger protection and justice for people affected by violence and drug-related crime.
Rabia said her father's commitment to public welfare remained unchanged and that politics was only one of several ways through which he could serve society.
Sidhu turned 63 on October 20. The former India cricketer has served as a parliamentarian, Punjab cabinet minister and state Congress president.
