Large-scale felling of trees being pushed to benefit Gujarat company: Raj Thackeray

Kolhapur/Raigad, Oct 28 (UNI) Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray strongly cricitised the proposed large-scale felling of 32,490 trees in the Sai hills (Sahyadri- Bhimashankar region) for the 3,000 MW pumped-storage power project, alleging it is being pushed to benefit a company from Gujarat.
Addressing a massive public rally at Karjat this evening, at police ground in Karjat, to protest the proposed massive deforestation and displacement to be caused by the proposed 3,000-megawatt Saidongar-I pumped storage hydroelectric project by Torrent Power, Thackeray strongly condemned the clearance given to it.
The project is to entail felling of over 32,490 trees across 233 hectares of forest land for the Saidongar-I Pumped Storage Project being developed by Torrent Power.
Thackeray accused the state and central authorities of favoring Gujarat-based companies by handing over sensitive Sahyadri forest and tribal lands at the cost of Maharashtra's environment.
He posed 10 sharp, direct questions to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, regarding the forest diversion, environmental clearances, and alleged a massive financial horse-trading/tendering controversy.
Referring to birds losing their nests and habitats due to the tree cutting, he warned that local villagers, tribal communities, and farmers would face similar displacement and loss of land if the project proceeds.
He urged local residents and gram sabha members not to merely plead for the destruction to stop, but to take a firm, united stand against the work.
He slammed the government over allegations that internet services were deliberately restricted or shut down around the rally venue in Karjat.
He stated that he will hold another major rally in Navi Mumbai in December 2026 "to keep up the pressure on environmental and regional issues."
