Leadership churn likely in Karnataka: Cong MLA

Bengaluru, June 30 (UNI) Political speculation over a leadership transition in Karnataka intensified today as Congress MLA HA Iqbal Hussain, a known loyalist of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, revealed that the Congress high command is fully aware of the evolving political dynamics in the state and will take a suitable decision at the "right time."
Addressing the media in Ramanagara, Hussain remarked, “Those who toiled for the Congress victory in 2023 are known to everyone. The leadership understands this.” His comments have been widely interpreted as an endorsement for a leadership change that could see Shivakumar succeed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the coming months.
Hussain's statement comes on the heels of a significant political signal by Karnataka Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna, who recently stated that "revolutionary political developments" could unfold in the state and at the national level after September. He hinted at a potential shakeup in both the cabinet and the Congress party’s internal structure in Karnataka.
"We were all in Delhi when the decision was made after the 2023 elections,” Hussain said, referring to the power-sharing arrangement that brought the Congress back to power. “Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge took that call. They will take the next decision as well—we must wait and see."
The speculation is further bolstered by the long-standing buzz about a rotational Chief Ministership deal between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Following the Congress party's victory in May 2023, the party leadership had reportedly negotiated a power-sharing formula to settle intense competition between the two senior leaders. While this arrangement was never officially confirmed, political observers believe it included a mid-term transition of power.
Minister Rajanna also suggested that cabinet reshuffles are likely, with many legislators aspiring for ministerial posts. "Everyone has their own agendas, and those agendas will take shape after September," he said, signaling wider changes within the ruling dispensation.
When asked to comment on MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah's recent dismissal of leadership change as mere speculation, Hussain firmly stood by his claims. "Everyone is entitled to their views, but the high command knows best. It decided the leadership once; it will decide again."
DK Shivakumar, who also serves as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, has made no secret of his ambition to become Chief Minister. His camp views the coming months as a crucial window to fulfill what they see as a deferred political commitment.
As of now, there has been no official word from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) regarding any leadership transition or cabinet restructuring in Karnataka.
