Lucknow: ED seizes SP leader Azam Khan's Ali Jauhar University land and building

Lucknow, Oct 28 (UNI) In a major decision, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday took major action against senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan's Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. The agency seized the university's land and buildings.
According to the sources, the attached properties are valued at ₹426.46 crore (approximately $1.1 billion in assets).
However, their estimated market value is approximately ₹1,170 crore (approximately $1.1 billion in assets).
This action was taken in connection with a money laundering case.
The ED stated that Jauhar University is governed by the Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, which was founded by Azam Khan and as its principal trustee. The university's campus is located in the Jauhar Nagar area of Rampur.
The ED has alleged that government funds, money received from contractors and money earned through criminal activities through irregularities in land-related matters were used to build the university's properties.
University campus assets worth Rs 1,170 crore seized which include university campus buildings and land located in Jauhar Nagar, Singankheda (Rampur) are owned by the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust.
Azam Khan is the founder of this trust and the university's honorary chancellor.
The ED investigation revealed that funds from government development projects and contractors were diverted into trust accounts at the university's private campus.
Even cleaning machines belonging to the Rampur Municipal Corporation were used at the university.
The ED initiated the investigation based on 26 FIRs registered at the Azim Nagar police station in Rampur.
These include cases of land grabbing from farmers and illegal occupation of approximately 34 acres of enemy property.
The trust had shown donations of ₹78.32 crore in its balance sheet, of which ₹66.03 crore was found to be fraudulent.
Consequently, the Income Tax Department (IT) has already cancelled the trust's registration.
During the police investigation in Rampur, it also came to light that in 2016, on the instructions of Azam Khan, the houses of many poor families were demolished using bulldozers and the debris was used in the construction of the university.
The ED has clarified that a thorough investigation is still ongoing in this matter.
Previously, in August 2026, the ED raided premises belonging to Azam Khan and those associated with him and recovered significant digital evidence and documents.
