Tirupati model for Sabarimala: Kerala CM promises world-class facilities after current season

Thiruvananthapuram/Sabarimala, Oct 17 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan on Saturday announced plans to transform Sabarimala into the country's best pilgrimage centre, with Tirupati-model facilities to be introduced for devotees after the current pilgrimage season.
Addressing the media after a high-level review and coordination meeting of various departments at the Pamba Sreerama Saketham Auditorium to assess preparations for the upcoming Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage, the Chief Minister said comprehensive measures would be taken to improve pilgrim amenities, crowd management, safety and healthcare facilities.
A German-model shelter capable of accommodating 6,000 devotees will be constructed at Nilakkal to ease congestion at Pamba. Facilities at transit centres along the pilgrimage route will also be expanded, while 22 medical emergency units will be established to address health emergencies.
Satheesan said the Travancore Devaswom Board would retain control over offerings and prasadam at the shrine. The board president had assured that adequate stocks of appam and aravana would be available during the pilgrimage season.
Police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel would be deployed under the leadership of their respective service chiefs to ensure the safety of devotees and facilitate smooth darshan, he said.
The government would also introduce a strict regulatory mechanism to prevent the abandonment of clothes at Pamba from turning into a waste-management problem. Waste disposal arrangements would be implemented within a fixed timeframe.
The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) would deploy 461 buses to transport pilgrims, while efforts would be made to improve connectivity between Sabarimala and various temples. The Motor Vehicles Department would conduct inspections to enforce road safety regulations.
The Public Works Department is renovating the Chalakkayam road at a cost of ₹15 crore, with instructions to complete the work at the earliest.
The Chief Minister said hospitals along the pilgrimage route would be equipped to provide quality medical care to devotees. All departments concerned would coordinate their efforts to ensure adequate facilities and a hassle-free pilgrimage during the Mandala-Makaravilakku season, he added.
