Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana's 'Rasta Roko' agitation called off after amicable solution reached on sugarcane price

Kolhapur, Nov 6 (UNI) Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana's (SSS) ongoing indefinite 'rasta roko' agitation at Kini toll plaza in Hatkanangale tehsil of this district, was finally called off on Friday with accepting the revised rate proposal given by sugar mill owners of Rs 3,900 per tonne sugarcane with additional Rs 100 after the crushing season is over.
Announcing this early this morning at Kini toll plaza, Raju Shetty, national president of SSS and former MP, said that a new proposal was placed before the SSS representatives after a meeting at the district collector office last night with State Minister Hasan Mushrif, MLA Prakash Awade and representatives of sugar factory owners and farmers' leaders.
According to the new proposal, Rs 3,900 per tonne sugarcane will be deposited directly into the farmers' accounts. Later, the sugar factory owners will give an additional Rs 100 after the crushing season is over; and if the sugar price is Rs 4,500 per tonne, an additional Rs 200 will be paid.
In this way, it will be easier for farmers to get a total price of up to Rs 4,200 for sugarcane.
After a marathon meeting at the District Collector's Office, Shetty officially announced that the protest is being suspended, accepting the revised rate proposal given by the sugar millers.
With this decision, the 'Kolhapur Bandh' called for tomorrow (Saturday) has also been called off, paving the way for the smokestacks of sugar mills in Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts of western Maharashtra to light up.
Shetty interacted with thousands of protesting farmers sitting at the Kinni toll plaza.
After the farmers' consent, he announced that he was suspending the rasta roko protest after 61 hours.
He also clarified that he is withdrawing the Kolhapur district bandh called for tomorrow as a solution has been reached.
The protest, which lasted for two and a half days, completely disrupted traffic on the national highway.
There were queues of vehicles for kilometers on both sides.
It also affected the movement of milk, vegetables and state transport buses.
