Maha: Buldhana records 111 farmer suicides in 10 months amid severe drought

Buldhana, Nov 2 (UNI) As many as 111 farmers have died by suicide in Maharashtra's Buldhana district between January and October this year, amid severe drought, crop failures and mounting debt, raising serious concerns over the worsening agrarian crisis.
The district, which largely depends on agriculture, is facing an acute drought situation, with the Kharif season severely affected and prospects for the Rabi season also remaining bleak. A significant decline in Rabi crop sowing is anticipated due to inadequate rainfall and water shortages.
Farmers are increasingly caught in a vicious cycle of crop losses, mounting indebtedness, inadequate irrigation facilities and financial distress, leaving many struggling to sustain their livelihoods.
According to official figures, of the 111 farmer suicide cases reported during the 10-month period, 69 have been found eligible for government assistance following inquiries. Financial assistance has been provided to the legal heirs of these farmers.
However, 21 cases were declared ineligible for compensation as they did not meet the prescribed government criteria, leaving the affected families without financial assistance.
The remaining 21 cases are still under investigation and their eligibility for compensation will be determined after the inquiries are completed.
The month-wise breakup of farmer suicides shows 14 cases in January, 12 in February, 11 in March, 15 each in April and May, 13 in June, 12 in July, three in August, nine in September and seven in October.
The rising number of farmer suicides has highlighted the severity of the agrarian crisis in the district, with fears that the prevailing drought and continuing crop losses could further aggravate farmers' financial distress.
