Maha: Fadnavis accuses Congress of conspiring to change Constitution

Mumbai, Nov 2 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis here today claimed that the Congress is conspiring to change the Constitution and end democracy by raising the slogan of 'regime change'.
Fadnavis said that there is a difference between the concept of changing a government through democratic means and a 'regime change'.
He stated that in a democratic system, everyone has the right to change the government and bring another government through elections.
However, the concept of "regime change" does not mean simply changing the government but changing the entire political system, the Constitution as well as the structure of constitutional institutions, he said at a public rally.
Fadnavis cited political developments in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka to support his allegations, saying that after regime change in these countries, their Constitutions and political systems changed.
"There was a regime change in Bangladesh along with a change of Constitution. There was a regime change in Nepal, where the Constitution changed. There was a regime change in Sri Lanka after which the Constitution was changed. Therefore, we must be careful that a similar attempt does not happen in India as well," he said.
Fadnavis claimed that he has come out on the streets to protect the Constitution and the democratic system.
"No matter what happens, we will never allow any regime change until the last drop of our blood. We will never allow the Constitution to be touched and we will not allow democracy to be in danger," he said.
He further said that the democratic system of India is based on its Constitution. He warned that any attempt to undermine this system will not be tolerated, arguing that protecting the Constitution is not only the responsibility of political parties but also of every citizen.
Fadnavis said that the intention of the Congress to undermine the Constitution is not new, referring to the events that led to the declaration of the Emergency in 1975 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi-led Congress government.
Fadnavis recalled how the Allahabad High Court declared then PM Indira Gandhi's election as invalid, after which she approached the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court stated that Indira Gandhi could remain Prime Minister, but she could not speak or vote in the Lok Sabha, he further said.
Fadnavis alleged that after the Supreme Court's order against then PM Indira Gandhi in 1975, the Congress amended the Constitution using its brute majority to nullify the court's decision.
He also alleged that attempts were made by the Congress government led by Indira Gandhi in 1975 to limit the fundamental rights of ordinary citizens.
