Maha: Congress slams Babanrao Lonikar for insulting farmers, demand apology

Mumbai June 26 (UNI) The Maharashtra Congress today strongly criticised former state minister Babanrao Lonikar over his insensitive and insulting remarks against farmers and demanded apology from him.
Talking to media here at the party head office, Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal said, "Insulting the food giver of the world is the height of perversion. BJP’s former minister Babanrao Lonikar’s arrogance has crossed all limits of tolerance. He has insulted farmers by abusing them and must offer a public apology, or else face dire consequences."
He targeted Babanrao Lonikar over his comment 'we gave you everything' against farmers.
Even the current Agriculture minister had earlier demeaned farmers by calling them 'beggars' and termed this comment as 'outrageous'.
Sapkal said, “It is increasingly becoming evident what ideology the BJP subscribes to. They are obsessed with ‘one language, one religion, one leader’ and want to portray themselves as the sole authority. This is a hateful and dangerous mindset. Governments are formed by the people’s mandate and run on public money. If schemes are implemented for farmers, it is not an act of charity. The belief that Narendra Modi gives everything is a delusion held by people like Babanrao Lonikar."
Hitting out at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, he said that Fadnavis is pushing for the Shaktipeeth Highway on orders from Delhi’s power brokers.
A corridor is being planned from Central India to Goa’s port to help favoured industrialists export their raw materials abroad, he claimed and said, "This is a red-carpet project exclusively for them."
He further said that the government claims it has no money to pay salaries to employees, no funds to clear contractors' dues, no money to provide Rs 2,100 to beloved sisters, no funds for farm loan waivers — yet it has allocated Rs 20,000 crore for the Shaktipeeth highway. This expenditure could go up to Rs 1.5 lakh crore and is a ploy for corrupt profiteering, the Congress chief alleged.
"This is the beginning of pushing Maharashtra toward bankruptcy," he noted.
The BJP government does not represent the interests of common citizens, farmers, labourers, or the unemployed — it exists only for a handful of corporates, added Sapkal.
