Maha: Debt-ridden farmer dies by suicide in Yeola ahead of Diwali

Nashik, Nov 3 (UNI) In a tragic incident just days before the Diwali festival, a 59-year-old farmer from Paregaon village in Yeola taluka allegedly died by suicide after reportedly struggling with continuous crop failures and mounting debt.
The deceased, identified as Ashok Lakshan Khillare, allegedly jumped into a well near his residence on the night of November 2.
The incident has triggered widespread grief in Paregaon and surrounding areas.
According to preliminary information, Khillare had been facing severe financial difficulties as he had failed to earn an adequate income from farming over the past two years. Drought-like conditions, repeated crop losses, rising agricultural input costs and poor prices for agricultural produce had reportedly pushed him into financial distress.
The increasing burden of debt, coupled with concerns about supporting his family, had reportedly caused him considerable distress.
With Diwali approaching, Khillare was reportedly worried about how to celebrate the festival, repay his outstanding loans and manage his family's daily expenses. Amid these financial difficulties, he allegedly took the extreme step of jumping into a well located near his house.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 10 pm on November 2. As news of his death spread, relatives, friends and local residents expressed deep sorrow.
Khillare's death has once again brought into focus the serious issue of farmers' financial distress and uncertainty in the agricultural sector. Continuous crop failures, increasing production costs, inadequate market prices and mounting debt are pushing several farming families into severe economic difficulties.
The incident also highlights the need for timely financial assistance, fair prices for agricultural produce, effective crop insurance schemes, debt relief and emotional support for distressed farmers.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the incident to ascertain the exact circumstances and reasons behind his death.
The last rites of Ashok Lakshan Khillare were performed at Paregaon crematorium at 9 am today amid a sombre atmosphere. A large number of residents from Yeola taluka attended the funeral and mourned the tragic loss of the farmer.
The death has cast a shadow of grief over Paregaon and the entire Yeola taluka, particularly as families prepare to celebrate Diwali. The incident has once again underscored the urgent need for the government to address farmers' grievances and extend timely support to families facing severe financial distress.
