Maharashtra launches ‘Public Relief Society’ to boost financial aid for critical illnesses & disasters

Mumbai, Nov 3 (UNI) In a significant move aimed at providing enhanced financial assistance to citizens affected by drought, natural calamities, and life-threatening illnesses, the Mahayuti government has announced the establishment of the 'Maharashtra Public Relief Society'.
Brainchild of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the new society is set to augment the existing Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) by tapping into corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, charitable organizations, philanthropic institutions, and individual donors.
According to officials, the primary objective of the society is to mobilize additional financial resources to ease the heavy medical burden on economically weaker sections. The funds will be utilized to cover the treatment costs of critical ailments—including heart diseases, cancer, kidney disorders, brain-related illnesses, and rare conditions—requiring expensive surgeries and prolonged medical care.
Apart from healthcare support, the mandate of the Maharashtra Public Relief Society extends to disaster management and social welfare. The funds raised will be deployed to assist victims of drought, severe accidents, and unforeseen natural disasters. Furthermore, the initiative will facilitate the distribution of essential commodities to the underprivileged, support organizations working for persons with disabilities, and sponsor community health camps and public awareness workshops.
Speaking on the development, Rameshwar Naik, Head of the CMRF and Charitable Hospital Aid Cell, stated that the initiative establishes a structured framework for public-private collaboration. By uniting corporate bodies, donor agencies, non-governmental organizations, and healthcare institutions, the state aims to widen the outreach of its welfare programmes and ensure timely financial aid reaches the most vulnerable populations across Maharashtra.
